Thacker Building

The Thacher Building is a four-story 22,000 sg. ft. Richardson Romanesque commercial building in downtown Topeka. Built in 1888 at a cost of about $40,000, the stone structure is a two-part commercial block form. The stone balustrade capping the building contains a nameplate inscribed "THACHER.“ In 2021, Jeff Carson, the owner of the building, noticed the foundation was rock-solid, but upstairs on the second floor, the west walls were slowly shifting inward. Falk Architects was hired to help with the $400,000 repair. Services included, drafting existing conditions of west building wall interior and exterior elevations where failure is occurring, sketch architectural improvements around structural elements, draft architectural improvements and details as required by SHPO and City of Topeka for permitting, sign and seal Architectural drawings.
