Falk-U (University) - Design Terms…”Proud, Shy, and Flush”

One of our favorite design terms is the word “proud”. When describing 3 dimensional space, as Architects often do, it is an extremely convenient word to use. It means , “to stick out past something”.

The word really seems to have its roots in carpentry, rather than Architecture so it isn’t all the commonly used among the high highfalutin types.

The opposite of “proud” is “shy”. She means “inset from something”. When two surfaces align, the term is “flush”.

Architects (should) use these words. They are good words.
